Mapping Out Weeks 1-3

Interactive notebooks
Our interactive Science journals will be put to use almost every day. They will be kept in the classroom. Parents, please feel free to come by any time and take a look at your child's journal.  Each assignment we do in class will be done in our journals or glued in when completed.

Wednesday, August 14 -
Rules and Procedures

Thursday, August 15 -
Rules and Procedures

Friday, August 16Decorating Interactive Notebooks
Students will decorate their notebooks by cutting out pictures from magazines and gluing them on the front

Monday, August 19 - Lab Safety
Students will learn the safety guidelines for science class. They will put them in their interactive journal, so that they will never forget what they are.

Students will watch a YouTube video titled AGHSLab Safety Rap.

Students will observe the following picture.  Can you find a student who IS following a safety rule?

Tuesday, August 20 - "Waft to Whiff" Lab
Waft to Whiff is a lab designed to teach scientists not to directly smell a substance, but to bring the fumes of the substance to their noses.  Students will have to use only their sense of smell to determine 15 secret substances in numbered opaque containers (35mm film canisters with holes in the lids).  In this lab, they will practice following directions, implementing lab procedures and using safety equipment properly.  Predictions will be recorded on the following recording sheet.
Mystery Scents Answer Key
 1.      Vanilla
 2.      banana
 3.      butter
 4.      mint
 5.      cinnamon
 6.      root beer
 7.      lemon
 8.      coconut
 9.      garlic
10.      soap
11.      chocolate
12.      chili powder
13.      coffee grounds
14.     honey
15.      strawberry

Wednesday, August 21 - Lab Equipment with QR Codes Stations
We will start class by writing about a memory that a scent from yesterday's lab investigation reminded us of.

I have seen so many posts on Pinterests using QR codes in the classroom!  This seemed as good a time as ever to take my first crack at incorporating QR in my classroom.  These small codes can link you to a website, text, video, and more.

Today, students will travel in groups to different stations, read clues about science tools, and make a prediction as to what the names are.  After they predict, they will then use the QR code reader app, NeoReader, to scan the codes on the actual science tools.  This will allow them to self-assess and write the actual names of the science tools in their journals.  This seems like a fun, interactive way to learn the names of several of the tools we will use this year.

At the conclusion of this activity, everyone will return to their desks, cut and paste an image of each science tool to an index card to make flashcards.  The students will write the title of the equipment and what it is used for on the cards as they view a slide show.  Flash cards will be kept in a pocket at the rear of their notebooks.  The handout of lab equipment can be found below.

Thursday, August 22 - Exploration of Lab Equipment
Today, students will get to practice using different science equipment! The students will travel around to different stations and explore! They will measure, observe, classify, play with magnets, and look through microscopes.

Friday, August 23 - Lab Safety Assessment

Topic
1 Assigned Lab Safety Rule

You are a graphic designer for the textbook publishing company, Science Texts Publishing.  Your boss has assigned you to create a poster focusing on one lab safety rule to be sold for classroom use in middle school and junior high school science classrooms.

Each student will be assigned one rule from the safety contract. Using 8 1/2 x 11 white paper, students will create a poster that clearly illustrates that safety rule.
Good "Billboard" Guidelines: (2" high letters. Very few words - paraphrase rule to shorten. One strong, large picture.) will be stressed. I will go through several examples of good and not-so-good posters before allowing students to start. The rubric can be found below by which each poster will be graded.

After collecting, I will put all posters on the chalk ledge and have the class vote on the "best" one. I will then laminate it and post it in classroom for the year.

Lab Equipment Assessment TBD

Monday, August 26 - The Scientific Method
Today we will learn about the scientific method and we will make a foldable to help us remember! This foldable was created by More Time 2 Teach and is available FREE on TPT.

After making the foldable, we will learn a Scientific Method Rap to help us remember the steps.

Tuesday, August 27 - Bubblegum Lab
Today, we will fill the Scientific Method foldable from yesterday with information from our Bubblegum Lab!  In this lab, students will investigate what happens to the mass of gum as it is chewed.  They will also make a double bar graph that compares the mass before and after chewing. Here are snapshots of the recording sheets for the three parts of the lab.
After completing the lab, we will do a little bit of singing (practicing the Scientific Method Rap)!

Wednesday, August 28 - The Three States of Matter
Today we will learn about the three states of matter!  In particular, we will discuss  the properties of mass and volume and their molecular structures.  We will make the foldable using the template below (created by yours truly).  Copy the two pages front to back, fold and glue the gray sections to each other. Each image on the third page is to be cut apart, classified as a solid, liquid, or gas, and finally, glued in the appropriate section on the front of the foldable.

Thursday, August 29 - Changing States of Matter
Today in Science we will learn about how adding or taking away heat can cause matter to change in state. A demonstration will be conducted using an ice cube, some tapered candles, and a soda from the drink machine.  We will make this in our interactive journals to help us remember all of this information! The images will be provide in the handout also shown below.

Friday, August 30 -
